First of all, let’s see what is a blog:
A blog (a contraction of the term “web log”) is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog. – Wikipedia
More and more people are starting to have a blog. But I have a question, what is the main cause which determines them to make a blog? I’ve asked a few people and here are their answers.

@bkmacdaddy
My answer: lots of reasons. To drive traffic to their site. To have a creative outlet. To share their opinion & knowledge. To influence.

I began my blog as a form of personal expression and to showcase my thoughts and feelings in design. I find new things to inspire me each day and so I’ve wanted a forum to express that, I also think blogs are set out to promote a person as an online presence in there opinions and design work to show off to potential employers. Blogs are a great way to keep busy and inspired.

There are a number of reasons why people start blogging. Whether it be for extra income, promoting a site or product, connecting with people to gain business contacts and/or work, demonstrating to people what they can do and most of all I think people just like to get their personal thoughts and opinions out there to likeminded people.

Many on the web start a blog to earn money though the real reason behind it should be because you have a general interest in the subject.

I started a Blog, because I was fascinated with the Design Community. I wanted to be a part of it and share my thoughts and ideas with other creative people all over the world. So I started Inspirebit.com although being honest, I had only a small knowledge of Wordpress, HTML and Blogging generally. I said to myself, just give it a try. Y’ know, the ‘no risk, no fun’ approach! And since I started, I have learned so much about Blogging, Design, Coding, Wordpress and so on and made lots and lots of great contacts around the world. It is actually sort of crazy, how having your own Blog can help you grow as a Graphic Designer and importantly in “real” live way. I absolutely recommend everybody to start a Blog.

Nowadays you can see more and more new blogs. I think there are 3 main blog categories: Business Blog, Sharing knowledge blog and Blogging for money.
In my opinion blogging is an excellent way to make new friends and useful connections. If you have a business, it is also a very good way to promote yourself, get acquainted with your clients to open a debate.
Second type – share knowledge. The desire to share their experiences, teach others. I am in this blog‘s category. I love design, graphics, blogging. I am a dedicated and every day I learn something new and I try to share my interests with my readers.
And the third type of course is writing for the money. You can easily identify such blogs from the copied, low quality content and tons of ads. Yes you can earn from blogging, but not in one day or month, as I mentioned you have to dedicate for blogging to be successful.

Blogging: for passion or just for money?
There are different type of “bloggers”: some of them are starting a blog just because they think that money can be won very fast & easy, without much work and the others which are starting a blog to share their knowledge, to help others, to promote themselves, to get in touch with new people, to write about what they like and, why not, win some money from this.
The “problem” is that the majority starts a blog just because they want to be successful with it and win lots of money really fast and they think that it’s easy and doesn’t need any involvement. Let me tell you that it is NOT easy and it involves a lot of work!
There are lots of blogs started every day, but many of them die after a few months from lack of interest, not being original, copy/pasting from other blogs and so on.

There are many blogs with 100.000 RSS subscribers or 100.000 Twitter followers and I bet that you are asking how did they manage to do that. It’s simple: you need to like what you’re writing about, you need to know what you’re writing about, you need to post constantly and, most important, you need to BE ORIGINAL if you want to have a successful blog!

Smashing Magazine
If you want to be successful and win money from blogging, you need to be patient and you need to involve in your own project. You’ll see that first few months you’ll get almost nothing from your blog; that’s the moment when you need to invest your knowledge the most, that’s the moment when you need to write good and constant.
You can’t win lots of money when you’re not known, because you don’t have traffic. Money in blogging depends on the visitors; more visitors mean more money. The number of visitors on your blog only depends on you! So, it’s your choice how your blog can progress.
